Twin-cities, projects and networks

The twin-city concept emerged during the build-up of connections between cities and
towns after the Second World War.

For historical and geographical reasons, twinning exchanges within the Nordic countries are well developed. Our Nordic twin cities are:

  • Akureyri in Iceland
  • Lahti in Finland
  • Randers in Denmark
  • Alesund in Norway

The five Nordic cities are all twin-cities with each other. The essence of cooperation is to promote international and cultural understanding and respect across borders. Within the Nordic twinning exchange, there are two annual events, a liaison meeting with the mayors and the City Chief Executive Officers and a Nordic twinning week for young people (NOVU). In addition to the Nordic twin-cities, Vasteras has three others;

  • Banja Luka in Bosnia
  • Ceske Budejovice in the Czech Republic
  • Kassel in Germany

Projects and networks

Project-oriented collaboration agreements have been reached with a number of cities elsewhere in the world. The City Executive Committee decides on matters concerning cooperation with partner cities. Such collaboration is to be clearly limited to specific project-related areas. The collaboration should be of limited duration and of benefit to all parties concerned. The city participates in international efforts by being a member of a number of national, regional and international organizations and networks.

This collaboration provides opportunities to gather knowledge from other cities and regions, both nationally and internationally, and at the same time showcase good examples of the work taking place in Vasteras. A link to a list of ongoing projects can be found in the list below.
